Tom is excited to speak with inventors and innovators in the chemical and biotech space about their patent and licensing needs, whether offensive, defensive, or strictly investigative. Tom tailors his input to fit the needs of each of his clients in a flexible fit-to-purpose solution, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Tom has over 17 years of experience practicing US patent law in the fields of chemistry and biological sciences. He holds a doctorate in biochemistry with post-doctoral experience in organic synthetic chemistry. Tom has experience working in mid-sized intellectual property boutique firms as well as large general practice firms. For four years Tom was Director of Intellectual Property at a biotech genetics company in Silicon Valley, California. This has equipped Tom with the understanding needed to address the issues facing most chemical and biotech companies from start-up to blue chip.

While Tom excels at providing strategy guidance on developing new patent portfolios for start-up chemical, pharma, and biotech companies, Tom is also experienced at evaluating and adding value to large global picket fence portfolios. Tom has experience in drafting new patent applications, prosecuting patent applications, representing clients in ex parte appeals ex parte reexamination before the USPTO Patent Trial and Appeals Board (PTAB), advising clients on enforcement of patent rights through initial cease and desist communications, as well as representing clients’ best interests in simple or complex licensing negotiations from term sheet to executed agreement.

Tom has personally drafted dozens of patent applications in a wide array of technologies including small molecule pharmaceuticals, photolithography, fuel cell polymer chemistry, resins and adhesives polymer science, enzymology, nucleic acid chemistry and enzymology, classical biochemical separations, wastewater treatment systems and methods, nanoparticles, food and nutrition science, bioinformatics employing neural network algorithms, monoclonal antibody technology including scFvs and microbodies, vaccine chemistry, amphiphilic molecules and specialty detergents for use in the protein crystallography space, genetics, and even human-powered portable boats.

Tom has often presented US patent “boot camp” seminars and similar types of patent topics to start-up entrepreneurs, in-house attorneys, and foreign patent agents through his participation in the American Chemical Society (ACS) conferences as well as Informa or EBD Group engagements.
