Paul D. Pyla is a patent attorney with a goal to obtain and protect innovative patentable technologies for clients within the biotech, life sciences, and chemical technical spaces, as well as adjacent technical fields.
Paul has over 4 years of patent prosecution experience at boutique intellectual property law firms assisting clients in the fields of organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, polymeric resins, coatings and films, lithographic polymers, pharmaceutical biotechnology (e.g., peptidic nanoparticles for drug delivery, cloned genes, purified proteins, gene therapy and methods, cell lines, cell culture methods and stem cells), agricultural products (herbicides, pesticides, fungicides), food chemistry, therapeutic methods, diagnostic reagents and methods, secondary battery technologies, and catalysts.
Prior to joining the firm, Paul was a Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office in the Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry Technology Center (TC 1600), focusing on examining applications (which included both claim construction and prior art searches) involving biotechnological and chemical compositions, methods of making/using (including assays), biotechnology-based apparatuses, biological cells (e.g., stem cells, regulatory T cells, adipocytes), enzymes, microorganisms (algae, bacteria, fungi), tissues, tissue culture, tissue engineering and scaffolds, immunology, bioethanol/biofuels, biomass hydrolysis and biofermentations, microbial fuel cells, chemical, microbial, animal feed and probiotic compositions and carbon nanotube compositions.
Additionally, Paul has over 14 years of research and development experience in the pharmaceutical and agricultural biotechnology industries as a protein biochemist, analytical chemist, and associate biologist.
With his over 30 years of corporate research and development, legal and governmental intellectual property experience, Paul provides his clients a unique perspective in understanding (from opposing sides) the obstacles and complexities of obtaining a valid and enforceable patent, as well as navigating freedom-to-operate matters for products and services by providing experienced analysis and opinions. With such a background, Paul provides a knowledge base to his clients that allows them the opportunity to succeed and grow their intellectual property portfolios.
Paul enjoys reading, wood crafting, home improvement projects, and spending time with his family.
